I say roll with that. Stop leading with the opportunity when it is not comfortable for you. Think about who your target market is for your product. You are smart to avoid spamming. It is a waste of time. Provide a solution to peoples needs who seek what you offer. The traditional ways of building a downline do not work for most so don't let it take you down.
