I have a career dilemma. I have three choices in which to choose.?
Either I can be a RN in a hospital. Two, a RN in the US Navy (starting rate of Ensign), or a local LEO (law enforcement officer). Also I would like to say that I an currently 38 years old. Either job will allow for a full career with generous retirement prospects. Please, serious comments only and yes, I can enlist as a medical officer up until age 42. LEO’s don’t have an age cap. Neither does being a nurse.
The salary choices loom largest: You’d likely earn the most, depending on your specialty, if you work as an RN in a hospital, especially if you’d work overtime or moonlight. Your hours should be pretty well controlled and your job pretty stable as an RN in the Navy, but the pay would be less. The local LEO jobs depend very much on the locality doing the hiring, and the top dog – whether he/she runs a good outfit, likes you, etc. and the risks to your life in violence are likely more than the about equal number of risks to your health in non-violent ways as an RN in either situation. The RN in the Navy could have the best benefits after 20 years, but the local LEO could be better, depends on the department.
The risks to your health as an RN should be a consideration. From a needle prick to constant exposure to contagious diseases to the stress of caring for the sick and feeble can take the quality of your life or your life too early. While the violence potential as a local LEO can be great or small depending on the locality, assuming authority consistently, unless it is a natural part of your personality, can be very stressful. And in all cases, you are usually working for someone else – a Charge Nurse, a doctor, a Sheriff, etc, who can make your life easier or more difficult.
All are good choices depending on your goals – how do you want to spend your time? How important are the $$? What is your long term goal?
Good luck!
